Mrs. Huizenga in Roncesvalles is an incredible one stop shop for all your vintage furniture needs. Whether you're on the hunt for retro china patterns, or can't wait to faint onto your very own vintage chaise, this is the place.

Catherine Huizenga, the founding partner has talked to us about this neighbourhood gem:

Mrs. Huizenga has been selling nice things to nice people since 2005. I opened the shop after living in the neighbourhood for many years. At the time, the community was in transition and there was demand for fun and quirky home furnishings.

With the Roncesvalles Polish community moving further west, and young families moving into the neighborhood, Huizenga's shop was in the right place at the right time. Many of the turn of the century homes in the neighborhood contained furniture that the older community had preserved and that the new families in the neighbourhood sought out.

Catherine calls the shop a "matchmaker of old community to the new". The shop is full of hidden gems, unique furniture, beautiful serving ware, retro lighting, you name it, they have it.

Mrs. Huizenga has long been a destination for interesting statement pieces. We aren't purists but do carry some antiques. Any high quality piece we would happily feature in our own home is welcome in our shop.

Catherine ran the shop solo between 2005 and the fall of 2012, when Dave Amer entered the equation as an equal partner. The shop also moved from 121 down to 28 Roncesvalles, a larger space and former location of a Goodwill shop. Mrs. Huizenga quickly grew into its new four thousand square foot location.

Filling such a huge space with unique pieces (that quickly find new homes) seems like it should be a supremely daunting task, but that's not the case.

Most of our inventory finds us. We are happy to make house calls and consider ourselves urban prospectors mining for gold in the attics and basements of the GTA. Our phone never stops ringing. We love it.

You know that feeling when you walk into a disorganized antique shop and it feels a bit crazy and you're not sure where to look first? That's not the case at Mrs. Huizenga. All pieces are carefully purchased and curated, they even organize their finds by theme!

We have true affection for the pieces we offer. Right now we have a mid century theme in the shop. Beautiful teak pieces with original upholstery that are increasingly difficult to find.

Perhaps the best thing about Mrs. Huizenga is its accessibility. According to Catherine, purchasing an estate at a time helps keep the treasures affordable. You read that right, "affordable" rare vintage finds. No, you're not dreaming.

Future plans for the shop include the addition of a room dedicated exclusively to rentals. Many people desire to display and use vintage pieces for special events without having to buy them.

We see a lot of couples renting furniture for wedding receptions or dinner parties. The days of hotel receptions with rubber chicken and fluorescent lighting have come and gone!

Home stagers and set decorators have been renting Mrs. Huizenga pieces for years, and word has gotten out to the general public.
