CBC Funding Cuts: Do We Care?

StumbleUpon 0 Like 13 Retweet 7
Money by Lauren Siegert
Money by Lauren Siegert

Last month, the CBC fell victim to a highly publicized funding cut from the federal government. A quick numbers recap: $115 million will be officially cut over the next three years, with CBC president Hubert Lacroix stating the loss actually amounts to $225 million when taking severance packages and ongoing budget plans into account. In terms of jobs, 650 layoffs are expected from now till 2015.

  • The News Network’s Connect with Mark Kelley is cancelled.
  • The radio news program Dispatches is also terminated, as are drama programs on Radio One.
  • Recording studios in St. John’s, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, and Edmonton are shutting down.
  • Radio Canada International goes from short-wave radio and satellite broadcasts to internet-only, while also dropping news services and broadcasts in Russian and Brazilian.
  • Ads will begin to run on the public broadcaster’s Radio Two and Espace Musique stations.

…but then I stop to think about whether I knew these programs and services existed in the first place. I’ve probably heard of Connect with Mark Kelley and Dispatches, but I can’t say I’ve tuned into either. As for Radio Canada International, I don’t think I’ve come across it before (though it is aimed at audiences outside of Canada). The point is, if I didn’t even know about these shows, can I feel upset that they are cancelled?

National Media Industry

TV by Gideon Tsang
TV by Gideon Tsang
This question points to a deeper issue in Canadian viewer habits and the state of our national media industries. While reactions to the funding cuts have been strong on the Web, ranging from a feeling of great loss to an eye-rolling “Suck it up” , perhaps the most intriguing one of all is ambivalence, which I suspect is how a sizable number of Canadians feel if TV ratings are anything to go by.

In terms of Canadian primetime television, the only major network where we can watch homegrown programs is the CBC; otherwise, primetime is dominated by American shows. And when it comes to viewership, CBC shows certainly lag behind those of private network competitors CTV and Global, both of who mainly broadcast shows imported from the States. According to BBM Canada, a not-for-profit industry organization that collects TV and radio audience data, the 30 most popular TV programs week after week are almost entirely made up of American shows on CTV and Global, with Hockey Night in Canada and the Canadian version of Dragon’s Den being the only CBC shows to place consistently in the rankings.

Looking at these numbers, I can’t help but wonder if the average Torontonian cares that there will be more reruns and less original and varied programming on the CBC, that there will be less documentaries, and that new bureaus in Africa and South America will be shut down.

Of course, ratings aren’t the only factor determining the CBC’s success. In fact, as a public broadcaster that taxpayers pay for, its mission isn’t, or shouldn’t be to chase after high numbers and profits. As outlined in its 1991 Broadcasting Act , the corporation’s mandate is to ‘reflect Canada and its regions to national and regional audiences’ and to ‘contribute to cultural expression’.

The Conflict of the Shows

Where the CBC has run into problems is that in trying to compete with private networks like CTV and Global. In doing so, the conflict between public service and attracting ‘eyeballs’, between informative, thought-provoking content and popularity, becomes clear. Is it part of the mandate to spend taxpayers’ money on buying American game shows like Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy? President Lacroix claims that these highly-rated shows lead more viewers to watch the Canadian programming that follows. What about airing William and Kate: A Love Story on the documentary program Passionate Eye? Does that reflect our national and regional culture?

CBC Television
CBC Television by
Wikimedia Commons
The issue of CBC’s direction, and the issue of whether Canadians care about homegrown content, do not have clear-cut answers. CBC cannot please everyone and be all things to all people, and Canadian viewers can’t help but be attracted to American content, which have bigger productions, bigger stars, and bigger promotional budgets. My view? I think the CBC should refocus on its mandate, stop trying to compete with private networks, and drop commercially-minded ventures, such as bidding for the broadcasting rights to the Olympics and selling ad time on radio.

The corporation should realign itself as a public service broadcaster and focus on telling national and regional stories. The ratings for these stories will probably not make it into the Weekly Top 30, but numbers only tell part of the story. Just because many people are watching doesn’t mean they are invested or enlightened. I do believe that by catering to Canadians who care about quality homegrown content, Canadians who, like myself, listen to English and French radio and watch shows that feature Canadian characters and settings, the CBC can be sustainable and well-respected as a public service broadcaster that informs us of relevant current affairs and produces well-made entertainment that enriches our culture. That would be better than spreading itself too thin trying to be commercial and public-serving at the same time, while succeeding at neither.

Looking at the nationwide picture, it would be a shame if these cuts affect CBC service in rural Canada. In city centres like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, these cuts have less of an impact since there are so many other channels and stations to tune into via cable or satellite. In smaller communities, however, the CBC is often one of a few, if not the only, source of live TV and radio for Canadians. It is in this regional, and national, function that the CBC should narrow its focus on. My hope is that the funding cuts will force the CBC to redefine its mission and serve Canadians who care.

Toronto Home Sales Up in April 2012

Downtown Toronto by David Jones

by David Jones

Greater Toronto REALTORS® reported a strong result of 10,350 transactions recorded through the Toronto MLS System for the month of April. Toronto average home sale prices continued to increase by more than 8.5 per cent year-over-year, even though the increase was marginally lower than the increases in February and March. The average price for April 2012 transactions was $517,556, including houses and condos in the Greater Toronto Area.

Price increases and competition were strongest for single-detached homes. Across the GTA, their prices were up by around 9 per cent. Resale prices at the condo market were increased by 4 per cent. The condo market is generally better supplied with inventory, a result of new construction continuing.

“Interest in single-detached homes has been very high, both in the City of Toronto and surrounding regions. Growth in single-detached listings has not kept up with demand, which means competition between buyers in this market segment increased. With this in mind, it was no surprise that the strongest annual price increase was also experienced in the single-detached segment,” explained Toronto Real Estate Board President Richard Silver.

Buyers were not deterred by continuing low rates. The board emphasized that mortgage rates, still very close to the low levels earlier this year, are driving the market.

“Monthly mortgage payments remain affordable for home buyers in the Greater Toronto Area. While interest rates are generally expected to increase over the next two years, the extent and timing of rate hikes has been thrown into question by slower than expected economic growth in the first quarter of this year. On net, borrowing costs are expected to remain a positive factor influencing home sales through 2012,” said Jason Mercer, TREB’s Senior Manager of Market Analysis.

Toronto Home Sales Increase – March 2012

Greater Toronto REALTORS® results for March 2012 show that home sales through the Toronto MLS Listings kept rising and were 8 per cent higher than a year before. The latest market update from the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) reported 9,690 real estate transactions last month compared to the 8,986 recorded in March 2011.

Richard Silver, TREB president, commented on these recent trends in a press release “The GTA resale market has not suffered from a lack of willing buyers this year. Buyers have been spurred on by the positive affordability picture brought about by low mortgage rates.“

According to Silver, “the challenge has been a lack of inventory. Many listings have attracted multiple interested buyers. Strong competition has led to annual rates of price growth well above the long-term average.”

Figures reveal that the biggest sellers were detached homes, the sales of which rose year-over-year.

The average selling price was increased by 10 per cent compared to March 2011, and the average selling price in the GTA was $501,614 last month.

“The number of new listings was up last month in comparison to March 2011,” said Senior Manager of Market Analysis for TREB, Jason Mercer. “However, based on the historic relationship between price and listings, the GTA resale market should be better supplied. If competition between buyers remains as strong as it is right now, we will most certainly see an average selling price above $500,000 for 2012 as a whole,” he added.

Famous Movie Houses for Sale

StumbleUpon 0 Like 20 Retweet 13

Would you like to live ‘inside’ your favourite movie? No, I’m not talking about purchasing a new video game; I’m talking about buying a house from a famous movie. Some of them were recently put on sale.

The fourteen-room mansion made famous in the movie Home Alone was put on the market in May of 2011. The large brick home, which was prepared to defend intruders by Macaulay Culkin in the iconic movie, is located in the suburbs of Chicago and was listed for $2.4 million. The owner, John Abendshien, purchased the Gregorian style home back in 1988 for just $875,000 dollars. The home is 4,250 square feet and stunning, to say the least. Interested parties can view the home by appointment at 671 Lincoln Ave, Winnetka, IL. The traps are not included — sorry.

The next movie house for sale was featured in the legendary Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The $1.65 million home is most famous for the scene in which a Ferrari 250 GT was driven through a glass paned wall. The main house was not actually pictured in the film, but it boasts a luxurious 3,000 square foot interior and was designed and built in 1953. The 1,300 foot pavilion featured in the movie was built 20 years later.

No one can forget The Godfather, and buyers looking to purchase movie homes for sale are in luck. Located in Staten Island, New York, the 6,2350 square foot home is built in the English Tudor style. The $2.25 million home is equipped with a pub and pool room. While the interior never made the cut in the film, the exterior, pool, and driveway appear numerous times. Interested buyers have come from as far as Australia to view the home. The home office has even been decorated in a style reminiscent of Vito Corleone’s office, complete with wooden blinds. Don’t forget to close the door.

While the movie Up is animated, a Salt Lake City homebuilder has constructed the motion picture movie home in real life, duplicating even the smallest details. Even the chairs on the front porch are exact replicas from the movie. While the homebuilder carefully toiled over every aspect of construction, some sections of the home are not displayed in the movie, such as the kitchen. In these cases, the builder was free to use his imagination to fill in the blanks, keeping with the same style.

Other famous movie homes for sale include the Bad Santa home located in California. The five bedroom, four and a half bathroom mansion was featured in the movie quite heavily. After Billy Bob Thornton drives his odd child admirer home, he finds out the child lives with his senile grandmother. Ultimately, Bad Santa calls the house home for a good portion of the film. It’s an original and funny movie, but it may ruin your idea of Christmas — or at least of Santa… The house quickly sold for $950,000 after it hit the market.

The Ennis house was built in 1923 by Frank Lloyd Wright using Mayan architecture style and was subsequently featured in several movies. The home has been featured in films such as Blade Runner (you’ll want to watch this one if you haven’t), The Karate Kid Part III (you don’t want to watch this one), and House on Haunted Hill (you don’t want to buy the house and then watch this movie). The Los Angeles home was first put on the market in 2009 for a hefty $15 million. However, lack of interest and the recession have now lowered the price to a more reasonable $7.5 million.

Fans of the famous Tom Hanks movie Sleepless in Seattle would be happy to know the houseboat featured in the film is now on the market. The 1993 romantic comedy featured the floating houseboat located on Lake Union in Seattle, Washington as the primary residence of Hanks. The houseboat features four bedrooms and 1.75 bathrooms for a cool $2.5 million. If the housing market starts to sink, your houseboat will stay afloat.

Many people remember The Field of Dreams, and the iconic quote “If you build it, they will come.” If you’re looking for movie homes for sale, you’ll be pleased to find the Iowa farmhouse is listed. Put on the market last year, the current owners are asking for $5.3 million. Over 65,000 fans visit the farmhouse every year, and if you’re wondering, the famous baseball diamond is included with the sale.

Artscape Wychwood Barns

Artscape Wychwood Barns

The Wychwood Barns share their name with the Toronto neighbourhood near which they stand; two blocks south of St. Clair Avenue West, hemmed in by Christie Street, Wychwood Avenue, and Benson Avenue, and only just north of the small, distinct community known as Wychwood Park. Consisting of twenty-two well treed acres between Davenport Road and St. Clair Avenue (a short distance west of Bathurst Street), the park was established in the 1870s by the English painter Marmaduke Matthews and his friend, Alexander Jardine. The two men bought twelve acres jointly in 1877 (with another ten already belonging to Matthews), and began what they envisioned as an artist colony.

Even now, over one hundred years after its beginning, Wychwood Park consists of only sixty houses, and it was the first residential neighbourhood in Toronto to be named a Heritage Conservation District under the Ontario Heritage Act.

History

The Wychwood Barns are not quite as old as the Park, but they too have a respectable (if not very dramatic) history attached to them. The first Barn was completed in 1913, and the last one went up in 1921. Originally, the Barns were designed to maintain and repair streetcars, and they functioned in this capacity for over half a century, serving as many as ten routes at their peak, as well as functioning as a development and test area for new streetcars. As the Toronto streetcar system evolved, the importance of the Barns began to fade. In 1978, the buildings were disconnected from the city track system, and all personnel and cars were moved to another site. For twenty years, the facilities were put to a variety of transit-related uses, such as storing old streetcars before their final trip to the scrapyard. Eventually, the cost of keeping and updating the property caused the Toronto Transit Commission to pass it back to the City of Toronto in 1998.

Restoration

Artscape Wychwood Barns5
Artscape Wychwood Barns

The task of restoring and transforming the Barns was eventually given to Artscape, the not-profit organization responsible for such notable Toronto regeneration projects as the Distillery District and Toronto Island Gibraltar Point. Artscape partners in the Barns project included the City of Toronto, The Stop Community Food Centre, and several other groups (such as the Taddlewood Heritage Association and Wychwood Heights BIA). Both community consultations and a study of existing European and North American examples took place to create a final vision for the Barns. The actual physical reconstruction took a little over a year — from March 2007 to October 2008.

Explore Barns

Artscape Wychwood Barns3
Artscape Wychwood Barns

Since their official reopening, the Wychwood Barns have served as a particularly artistic and environmentally-conscious community centre. Although connected and functioning essentially as one building, each barn is referred to separately and offers distinctive services. The Covered Street barn, or Barn Two, is perhaps the closest to a conventional community centre, offering rental space for community events such as festivals and art exhibitions. Barn Three is geared more towards local environmental and arts groups. Barn One, the Studio Barn, contains working and living space for twenty-six artists, as well as extra studios and a community gallery exhibiting local work. The Stop Community Food Centre runs the Green Barn (Barn Four, which includes a food education centre, greenhouse, community kitchens, and outdoor components consisting of a bake oven and a sheltered garden). Barn Five is a framework with neither walls nor roof, and acts as a sort of intermediary between the rest of the barns and the park lawn to the south. The Stop Farmers Market (one of the two largest in the city) is held every Saturday at the Barns, spread around outside during the warm weather and inside Barn Two during the cold months.

I’m fascinated by how unique and personal a persons video shooting/editing style is. I getting so I can turn off the audio and recognize who shot the video.

I thought it would be interesting to just post a compilation of some of the real estate videos that were shot in the last week or so. These six videos are just a random sampling of some of the YouTube channels that I subscribe to. Notice that two of these videos are shot by real estate agents (Terry Burger and Julie Kinnear). This 2 out of 6 is about the same ratio PFRE readers that are agents that do their own photography (~30%).

I think the most interesting is that Julie Kinnear which may look unpolished along side of the other videos. However, despite fact that it appears that Julie doesn’t do any editing of her videos they are effective and engaging. They are simple, straight forward and she turns them out like crazy. More Regulation in the Mortgage Market

StumbleUpon 0 Like 28 Retweet 12
Epicenter of Banking in Canada by Jeff
Epicenter of Banking
in Canada by Jeff

The Bank of Canada announced again that it is maintaining its target for the overnight rate at 1 per cent and there is no real chance it will increase it in next decisions. Some even believe that the Bank will have to decrease the rate to 0.75 per cent. Meanwhile, the debt-to-income ratio is still far from safe levels, and discussions about a sharp decline in housing prices are getting hotter. Specialists came up with the only logical solution: more regulation in the mortgage market.

Unfavourable Statistics

The debt-to-income ratio among Canadian households fell in the fourth quarter of last year to 152.9 per cent from 154.2 per cent. The reason wasn’t decreasing debt but income for farms and unincorporated businesses that rose at a faster pace. “Household net worth was up nearly 1 per cent in the fourth quarter, led by gains in the values of household holdings of equities (including mutual funds) and pension assets,” Statistics Canada informed. “Household credit market debt increased in the fourth quarter despite a slower rate of borrowing in consumer credit and mortgages.”

According to a report released by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), only 42 per cent of homeowners in Canada are mortgage-free. According to a report by CIBC World Markets Inc., the surge in Canadian borrowing over the last five years has been driven by the most indebted households. Households heavily dependent on borrowing now hold 73 per cent of all household debt in Canada.

Household by Jofo2005
Household by Jofo2005

“Some 34 per cent of households that have debt are now in the high debt burden category and they account for nearly three-quarters of household debt outstanding,” added Avery Shenfeld, Chief Economist at CIBC.

Despite several warnings in the media, Canadians have no reason to be discouraged. The mortgage rates are still at historic low levels and banks are playing a risky game: who will offer the lowest mortgage rate? Bank of Montreal currently offers a 2.99 per cent five-year mortgage rate, the lowest five-year rate in modern Canadian history.

Regulation Needed

Craig Alexander, chief economist at TD Bank, says that the government should step in to the housing market again and gradually roll out a series of steps. “We want to ensure that the imbalance we have doesn’t get any bigger, so the economy over the medium term can weather the inevitable future adjustment in interest rates,” Alexander said in an interview for The Globe and Mail. “If we incrementally lean against credit growth while we have low rates, it will be a better outcome for the economy.”

Meanwhile, the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) released a draft paper that suggests several changes to mortgage underwriting practices and procedures. Experts are already concerned that if the changes were implemented, it would significantly change the whole mortgage market. It is currently open for public comment.

Famous Movie Houses

Psycho House and Motel

What can be considered the most famous movie house? You may have a different opinion, but I believe it is the one featured in the 1960 classic, Psycho. The house and motel featured in the movie Psycho was constructed in the ’60s and made using pre-existing features in the Universal Studio backlot. Since then, the Psycho home has been moved several times and now rests between other prop homes used in films such as How The Grinch Stole Christmas and War of the Worlds. Through the years, the two-wall faux home has been remodelled extensively to take on a new life. The prop house can still be viewed by the public via the Universal Studios tour.

The Addams Family is a staple for American culture. Their home has been displayed across millions of TV sets around the country. In the first season, the exterior shot of the home was an actual house located in Los Angeles, California. Unfortunately, the house was later torn down, and a painting replaced it in the second season. The famous plate on their iron fence, which read “Beware of Thing,” easily brings back memories of the home. Who could forget the bodiless hand or the mounted swordfish head with a leg hanging out of its mouth? These weird and creepy antiques were part of what made the series so successful.

The X-mansion is famous from the X-Men cartoon as well as the motion picture. The mansion not only serves as the home of Xavier but also as the training centre of his mutant teenage pupils. The epic mansion contains the infamous Danger Room that houses Cerebro. In the 2011 movie X-Men: First Class, the X-mansion was shot at Elizabeth Manor, which is located in Berkshire, England. This mansion is the dream house of any comic book fan or technology lover.

“My Golden gun against your Walther PPK.” The iconic quote was featured in the 1975 classic James Bond movie Golden Gun. The movie also showcased a magnificent house owned by the extravagant hit man, Scaramanga. The island home was built into the side of a small island and was powered by the highly sought-after Solex Agitator. The actual island is real and called Khao Phing Kan, located on the west coast of Thailand. The actual house was never built on the island; however, through Hollywood magic, moviegoers were led to believe so. The house also featured the memorable playhouse where Scaramanga untimely led his challengers to duel.

When Stuart Little premiered in 1999, young children across the country dreamed of having their own talking mouse. Stuart Little is adopted from an orphanage where he takes residence in a brownstone style New York City residence that is tightly squeezed between two large office buildings. The interior of his new home is decorated in a resonance style, complete with checkerboard tile and a hidden door in the foyer. The living room is also equipped with an elegant stone fireplace, another piece that adds to the elegant ambience. Some of the most memorable pieces of the movie include all the mouse-sized features, such as Stuart’s bathroom mirror and sink. How wouldn’t love to have a talking mouse brother?

If you grew up in the 1990s, you have undoubtedly seen the classic Mrs. Doubtfire. The 1993 comedy features Robbin Williams dressed in drag posing as a nanny. The movie won Best Makeup, as Robbin Williams get-up took over four hours to prepare. The exterior of the house is a Victorian Painted Lady style, and the home is located in beautiful San Francisco. However, for the interior shots, they constructed a mock home in a Bay Area warehouse. The interior of the house is a timeless Victorian style that even today is not considered outdated.

Living with Allergies: Allergy-free Home

More than 2 billion dollars are spent each year to fight against allergy symptoms like itchy eyes and runny noses. Treatments are getting more effective, but in addition to the recommendations of your doctor, there are easy and inexpensive steps to work toward an allergy-free home — a haven from irritating allergens.

Decreasing the exposure to environmental allergens at your place can lead to the significant improvement of your health when you don’t suffer from any of indoor allergies. The most common indoor allergens include moulds, pet dander, pollen, smoke, and dust mites. Following this room-by-room approach can help to control these common allergens throughout your home and lessen the severity of your symptoms.

Bedroom

During our lives, we spend a significant portion of time in the bedroom. We all know how a proper night’s rest can do wonders. That’s why your bedroom is the perfect place to start allergy-proofing. Begin with dust mite-proof covers on pillows, mattresses, and box springs. Change your bedding at least every week and wash it in water above 130 degrees.

Carpets are very allergen-friendly, so hard flooring like wood or linoleum is best to keep your bedroom clean. If you can’t give up a favourite piece of Persian carpet, use a vacuum cleaner with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter to vacuum it weekly.

Allergens like to linger in window coverings, so wash them weekly as well. If you have any pets, set up an allergen-free zone, including the bedroom, to keep pets out. Make sure all furniture has hard, easy-to-clean surfaces. Running a HEPA filter while you sleep and keeping windows closed will eliminate any stray allergens from the air.

Bathroom

Exhaust Fan by Ubi Desperare Nescio
Exhaust Fan
by Ubi Desperare Nescio

Main dangers in this room are moulds and moisture. Use an exhaust fan to eliminate as much moisture as you can and move steam out of the room. Beware of leaky plumbing and fix it immediately. Choose appropriate rugs, window coverings, and fabrics, and avoid moisture-trapping items or at least clean them often. Opt for a nonporous wall surface and avoid wallpaper if possible. Towel the room after you shower. Replace mouldy shower curtains or liners and clean everything properly each week. In the case of any visible moulds, 5 per cent chlorine bleach solution will be effective.

Living Room

As with the previous rooms, avoid materials and places in which allergens can linger. This is especially true for carpeting, curtains, blinds, wall hangings, and upholstery. Keep weekly cleaning sessions and include a thorough dusting. Equip your vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter. Watch for any signs of mould and moisture, and be careful with the allowance of smoking. Keep windows closed during allergy seasons.

Kitchen

In the kitchen, the main goal is to keep an eye on moisture and the resulting mould. Also, keep insects and other pests out. An exhaust fan will find the use here as well to vent steam from cooking. Keep hard surfaces clean and fix any plumbing leaks immediately. Watch out for the sink: it should be empty and dry. Another important thing is your refrigerator. Avoid mouldy food and empty water from the drip pan when needed. Emptying the garbage daily is highly recommended — especially if you’re not living alone. At the first signs of insect or pest invasion, consult with a specialist, and meanwhile eliminate their access to food.

Basement

Basement by Mark
Basement by Mark

The dark, damp areas of the basement are mould traps. Typical problems involve carpets, upholstered furniture, and moisture-trapping fabrics. These all can harbour moisture. Keep foundations, windows, and stairwells clean and dry. Use sealed plastic containers for storing various items and a dehumidifier if moisture stays at high levels.

These steps might appear quite complicated, but you should try them. You will probably be surprised by the results of what seemed daunting before. Lowering the dust mite population is especially crucial. These microscopic, eight-legged creatures thrive in humid and dusty environments. That’s why you should try to avoid such conditions in your home. Many treatments are available for allergies; work closely with your physician to find the best plan to make a more allergen-free home. You might be able boost the efficacy of your treatment.

Allergy-fighting products

No wonder allergy products spell big business. Manufacturers try hard to develop new products to help your breathing and stop itching and sniffling. Apart from products that ignore what triggers your allergy and which are effective only in keeping the pesky symptoms under control, it’s good to invest in allergy-fighting products that can be used around your home.

Harold S. Nelson, MD, a renowned allergist, says it’s important “to figure out what you are allergic to.” Once you know that you are allergic to your beloved cat, dust mites, pollen, or even all of the above, it’s much easier to begin shopping for allergy items that keep these triggers at bay. Nelson perceived these allergy products as most effective for allergy sufferers.

HEPA filter

HEPA Filter by Wikimedia Commons
HEPA Filter by Wikimedia
Commons

High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters can remove as much as 99.9 per cent of the most common allergens. They are even effective in eliminating bacteria in the air. Nelson emphasized that whether or not you need one depends on the type of your allergy, as some allergens (for example dust mites) are heavy particles, so they don’t remain airborne. On the contrary, animal dander remains in the air longer, so a HEPA filter air cleaner would be a good tool for cat and dog allergies. Investment in a HEPA filter is also helpful if you suffer from pollen allergies. If it’s just dust mites then save your money.

Dehumidifiers

Dust mites do not like humidity lower than 50 per cent, and investing in a dehumidifier may be an excellent way to combat them. According to Nelson, the effect is even greater when the humidity falls below 40 per cent. These levels will limit their growth, even in the summer season. Dehumidified air in the home can limit fungal growth, too.

Air Conditioners

Air conditioners are good for pollen and dust mite allergies, as they keep humidity down. These appliances cool down and re-circulate air, what eliminates indoor pollen exposure. However, be careful with fans. Window or attic fans can draw pollen-rich air from outside into the room and make your breathing more difficult.

Bedding

Allergen-resistant bedding is only effective as a barrier for dust mite allergies. Beds provide fertile ground for dust mites to live and proliferate. Nelson recommends covering the bedding and pillow with an impermeable barrier and to have bed covers, blankets, and sheets that can be easily washed every week in hot water. A variety of the barrier bedding fabrics is available, so talk to your allergist to find out about the most suitable brand and type for you.

Cleaning Supplies

Chemicals, especially those found in the cleaning products, are common causes of allergic reactions as well as asthma attacks. You might be fine with common allergens, but if you feel the symptoms, ask doctor for more a detailed test. You actually might be allergic to the cleaning products you use. Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean you never have to clean again! Doctor Nelson advises avoiding more irritating products, especially spray and ultra-high-efficient types. If our parents did well without spray-on furniture polish and instead used a wet cloth or sponge, maybe it could be a way to avoid the excessive use of chemicals in our homes and also to save on our budgets.

Home Prices Up More than Expected

In February, home prices in Toronto grew more than economists predicted and some warnings that the forecasts for 2012 would have to be revised appeared almost immediately. What do the specialists say about the future of Canada’s and Toronto’s real estate markets?

Toronto Real Estate Board informed that in February 2012, the average selling price in the TREB area was up 11 per cent ($502,508) compared to February 2011. The Home Price Index, a less volatile measure of price growth, grew by 7.3 per cent.

“With slightly more than two months of inventory in the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) market area, on average, it is not surprising that competition between buyers has exerted very strong upward pressure on the average selling price. Price growth will continue to be very strong until the market becomes better supplied,” said TREB’s President Richard Silver.

Jason Mercer, TREB’s Senior Manager of Market Analysis, also noted that if tight market conditions go on bringing higher than expected price growth in the coming months, predictions for 2012 as a whole will have to be revised upwards. Sixty nine sales were sold for more than $2,000,000, while 65 sales of detached houses and 4 sales of condo apartments did the same. The average price for detached houses is $638,080, i.e. 127 per cent of average house prices in Toronto. All other housing types remain under the total average except for detached condos (only one unit was sold in February for more than $1,000,000). The most expensive region was York Region, with an average price $584,973, and the cheapest was Dufferin County, with an average price $311,664.

According to the Bank of Nova Scotia, a “slowdown in global growth over the past year has sapped some of the strength from Canada’s formerly hot real estate sector, particularly in major urban centres such as Vancouver and Toronto.”

Adrienne Warren, Scotiabank senior economist and real estate specialist, claims that homes are likely overvalued by as much as 15 per cent due to an extended period of rising prices and low mortgage rates, but she is not afraid of the disastrous situation resembling the U.S. housing bubble crash. “I don’t think there’s a big risk of a big price correction,” she said.

Living with Allergies: Pets at Home

StumbleUpon 0 Like 23 Retweet 8
Pet by Christopher Woo
Pet by Christopher Woo

Almost every parent knows the situation: your child comes home excited and won’t stop repeating stories about Benny or a similar name. It takes you a couple minutes to realize that Benny is not a new kid at school, but her friend’s new dog. And if your kid’s incessant pleading for a pet has finally won you over — or worn you out — it’s time to start thinking practically. But what do you do if somebody in your family suffers from a pet allergy?

This inconvenience can be a reasonable obstacle to buying any pets. However, the benefits of having a pet at home usually outweigh the drawbacks of pet allergies for many people. Although allergists claim the best remedy is to remove the pet from the home, you might be surprised by the number of people who have learnt to live with their pets in harmony even if they have pet allergies.

It’s estimated that approximately 30 per cent of people are allergic to dogs or cats. If you do not belong to this group, you shouldn’t rule it out just yet. “You can develop an allergy at any time,” explains Derek K. Johnson, MD, director of allergy and immunology at Temple University Children’s Medical Center. “That’s why it’s important to know what causes pet allergies. It’s the flakes from the animal’s skin, called dander, not the fur. So even if it’s a bald cat, you can be allergic.”

Another source of allergens can be found in the animal’s saliva on the fur or on your skin after you cuddle with your pet. Of course, pet urine as well as other body substances can also be a culprit.

Most of allergies are caused by cats, claims Dean C. Mitchell, MD, a board-certified allergist in practice in New York. “I have had people come to me from all walks of life,” he continues. “Some people can’t even go to Thanksgiving at a house with a pet. I see veterinarians with allergies, pet groomers.”

Symptoms of a Pet Allergy

Symptoms by M Car
Symptoms by M Car

It’s not so easy to know you are pet allergic. The allergic proteins produce histamines in your body and they result in sudden eye itches, wheezy breathing, or a rash. Such symptoms are tricky, especially in children, who are often prone to colds or diagnosed asthmatic.

“No one is born with an allergy,” Johnson emphasizes an important fact, “they just develop in some people from exposure.” Yet it is true that allergies can be hereditary. According to Johnson, children exposed to animals before their immune systems are fully formed at age 2 are unlikely to become allergic.

German scientists who studied children in rural areas of German-speaking countries support the very same conclusion in the New England Journal of Medicine. Similarly, an article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that regular contact with two or more dogs or cats in the first twelve months of life may reduce the risk of future allergic sensitization to various types of allergens. Interestingly, according to these studies, pets can help to prevent the development of allergies.

Coping With Pets in the Home

Cat in box by Kerry Vaughan

There are many ways to reduce allergy symptoms if they make you totally miserable. Avoiding exposure to pet dander is essential. Even though it might not eliminate symptoms, inconvenience should be lowered to some degree.

Contrary to popular belief, there are no “non-allergenic” breeds of pets. Even hairless breeds can cause symptoms. As already mentioned, the main cause of allergic reactions is not the fur but the flakes of animal skin. Dogs with soft, growing hair (like the poodle or the bichon frise) might be less irritating, although this is highly individual. The severity of allergies varies across different breeds, but scientists have not been able to draw any general conclusions so far.

Maybe you are curious about so-called hypoallergenic pets, claimed to be special allergen-free pets. The majority of specialists consider this phenomenon a myth. Renowned Dr. Greenwald says: “I think people are fooling themselves,” adding that “it is true that so-called hypoallergenic dogs perhaps shed a little bit less, but we’ve clearly seen allergies to these dogs as well.”

Whether you think these special breeds are efficient in preventing allergic reactions or not, these are effective methods to prevent or decrease allergic reactions to pets:

  • Set up an “allergy-free” zone in the home. Limit the areas where the animal is allowed, preferably the bedroom and the bathroom.
  • Wash your pet often. Bathe her at least once a week. The level of allergens can be significantly decreased by as much as 84 per cent!
  • Clean your place thoroughly. Remove dust and dander frequently. Use a vacuum with an allergen-trapping filter.
  • Wash your hands after playing with your animal.
  • Buy a HEPA air cleaner. HEPA filters (available at almost any specialized store) help you in fighting allergens.
  • Check humidity. Maintain indoor humidity at 40 per cent or less. If necessary, use a (de)humidifier.
  • Get impermeable covers for the mattress and pillows. Covers such as zippered, plastic casings prevent accumulating allergen particles in mattresses and pillows.
  • Avoid dust-and-dander-catching furnishing. Replace cloth upholstery, cloth curtains and blinds, and carpeted floors with alternative coverings.
  • Try immunotherapy or other medical therapies. Allergy shots can improve the symptoms by gradually desensitizing your immune system to the pet allergens. Consult your allergist. New, more effective, and safer medications for allergies are developed each year.
Rabbit by Audrey
Rabbit by Audrey

Also, don’t be quick to blame the family darling for allergies if you notice some symptoms. Speak to your allergist and get tested for allergies to pet dander before making an assumption. Allergies are cumulative, and many sufferers are actually sensitive to more than one allergen. Eliminating the exposure to dust, pollen, and cigarette smoke might reduce reactions as well, and then you don’t need to look for a new home for your pet.

I remember my friend mentioning how her doctor got angry when she mentioned her three cats at the preventive check-up. It’s true that pets living at your place can be a potential danger for your health, but the advantages are also worth mentioning. Many health benefits that come from being the owner of pet were recorded, such as lowering high blood pressure, combating depression, and preventing heart disease and diabetes. Maybe you’ve heard about therapy dogs.

Pets — whether a dog, cat, bird, hamster, reptile or fish — help children develop a sense of responsibility and discipline and prepare them for difficult life situations, too. Last but not least, the charming moments spent with your pet are absolutely priceless. As my friend says, “A house is not a home without a pet.”

Toronto Housing Market Results – February 2012

Greater Toronto REALTORS® released sales statistics for February 2012 and showed the month was another very strong one for sales and prices in GTA. The number of sales exceeded the average for February for the first time since 2000. Historically, February is one of the busier months, and this year was no exception.

The Toronto Real Estate Board reported 7,032 sales for the month. This is a 16 per cent increase over the month a year earlier. However, it’s important to mention that there was one additional day in February, as 2012 is a leap year.

The February average sale price came in at $502,508 — up 10.6 per cent compared to the figure one year ago. The Composite MLS® Home Price Index for TREB was up by 7.3 per cent compared to February 2011. The number denotes a less volatile measure of price increase compared to the average price.

“With slightly more than two months of inventory in the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) market area, on average, it is not surprising that competition between buyers has exerted very strong upward pressure on the average selling price. Price growth will continue to be very strong until the market becomes better supplied,” explained Toronto Real Estate Board President Richard Silver.

He also emphasized “that both buyers and sellers are aware of current market conditions“ that is according to him evidenced on the average listing sold for 99 per cent of original price. Data also showed that the average days on the market was 24, down from 27 a year earlier.

“If tight market conditions continue to result in higher than expected price growth as we move into the spring, expectations for 2012 as a whole will have to be revised upwards,” said Jason Mercer, TREB’s Senior Manager of Market Analysis. “While price growth remains strong, the average selling price remains affordable from a mortgage lending perspective for a household earning the average income in the GTA.”

Phil Soper, president of Brookfield Residential Real Estate Services, which operates Royal LePage, says, “There is really a lack of product. We expect that to pick up considerably, and by the end of March.”

“The national housing market is stabilizing and remains well balanced,” summarized Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) president Gary Morse. CREA warned that average price comparisons could become “volatile and may turn negative” in the coming months.

Some analysts also expect the entire winter market to have tight supply. Price increases of 2 to 5 per cent should occur in the upcoming period from now to the end of March.

Guide to Sustainable Flooring

StumbleUpon 16 Like 3 Retweet 2
Ceramic Tile by Mtneer man
Ceramic Tile by Mtneer man

One of the most effective ways to make your home more environmentally friendly is to use sustainable flooring. Switching to “green” floors also benefits anyone with health concerns such as allergies and asthma, as well as people looking to save some money long-term (and who isn’t?).

If you’re wondering what exactly qualifies as sustainable flooring, it’s flooring whose entire life cycle is sustainable: from growing and farming the flooring material, manufacturing, installation, and use to disposing the flooring. Green flooring typically contains natural or recycled material, is often grown or harvested locally, and ideally comes from a quickly renewable, widely available, or easily replenishable source (such as cork, bamboo, or clay).

Why sustainable flooring?

Linoleum by Gerry
Linoleum by Gerry

The most obvious reason to switch to sustainable flooring is environmental conservation. For example, hardwood floors such as maple, oak, and birch traditionally require the clear-cutting of forests or the cutting of endangered trees for specific wood types. Sustainable flooring material either avoids the need to cut down trees altogether by not using wood, or, if wood is desired, it’s harvested using sustainable practices (abstaining from clear-cutting, replanting trees, and leaving the surrounding wildlife undisturbed).

Another way in which green flooring reduces environmental impact is by sourcing material from local or regional farms and factories. This way, there’s less shipping involved to deliver the material to a store or a customer, which reduces fossil fuel use and air pollution.

Many people install sustainable floors for another important reason: to improve indoor air quality. Synthetic flooring made of vinyl, carpet, and some flooring glues and finishes emit gases (called volatile organic compounds, or VOCs) that are bad for our health. VOCs aggravate allergies and asthma and can even induce headaches and skin rashes. Sustainable flooring minimizes this health risk by using natural materials that don’t require as many chemicals or synthetics during their production, lowering the production and release of VOCs.

Finally, there are the financial savings. This may not seem so obvious, since sustainable flooring products generally cost more than conventional ones. However, the long-term savings can outweigh the initial cost: sustainable floors tend to last longer (which reduces the environmental and financial costs of sourcing, shipping, and installing new floors); they cost less to dispose of; and the health savings they provide add up, thanks to better air quality.

Types of sustainable flooring material

Once you’ve decide to install green flooring for your home, you’ll need to consider which material suits your needs best. Homeowners nowadays are spoilt for choice when it comes to sustainable flooring products.

Wood

Wood Floor by Daniel R Blume
Wood Floor
by Daniel R. Blume

This ubiquitous flooring material is easy to clean and maintain, long-lasting, and it can increase your home’s market value. Wood flooring can be sustainable if you buy from stores that sell reclaimed, recycled, or salvaged wood. This wood comes from old structures like houses, barns, factories, bridges, or even ships. Some people especially like the aged texture of salvaged wood.

If you prefer new wood, buy material from forests that are approved by the Forest Stewardship Council. The wood from FSC-certified forests are sourced using sustainable practices. This means endangered forests are conserved and that wildlife and waterways around the forests are protected, as are the rights of Aboriginal peoples and local communities.

In addition to buying sustainable wood, make sure the varnish and floor finish you intend to use are low in VOCs, since these chemicals traditionally contain a high volume of these harmful gases.

Cork

Cork Flooring by Steve Ryan
Cork Flooring by Steve Ryan

Cork is a common, all-natural, sustainable flooring material. It’s very green, since harvesting cork trees only requires stripping off their bark, which then grows back quickly for another harvest. This process also doesn’t kill the trees, further conserving the environment. Cork has insulating, cushioning, and water-resisting qualities. Since it’s a popular choice, cork flooring also comes in many colours and designs — and in a wide price range. Make sure the floor adhesive and finish you choose are also low in VOCS.

Linoleum

A great green alternative to vinyl, linoleum is another widely used all-natural flooring alternative. It’s made from linseed oil mixed with reclaimed materials such as ground sawdust and cork dust, and it’s completely biodegradable. Much like cork, there are many colours and patterns to choose from on the market at a variety of prices. It’s also easy to clean and maintain. Do note, however, that after installation, linoleum floors give off an odour due to the linseed oil. This is harmless and goes away after a few weeks.

Bamboo

Bamboo Texture by Ray Villalobos
Bamboo Texture by Ray
Villalobos

A grass that grows quickly, bamboo is a sustainable flooring choice since it’s ready to be harvested in two to three years, compared to decades for hardwood trees. Another plus is that harvesting bamboo doesn’t kill the plant. This flooring choice is probably the closest in hardness and feel to traditional wood, which might be important if you love wooden floors but are looking for a green alternative. One thing to keep in mind is that bamboo is often sourced from Asian countries, where forest sustainability practices are less stringent or non-existent. This also means fossil fuel use and air pollution due to shipping are considerable. Also, some bamboo processing plants produce formaldehyde, a VOC gas, during manufacturing. Research manufacturers and retailers if you’re serious about being as sustainable and healthy as possible with bamboo flooring.

Ceramic Tile

Produced from natural clays, ceramic tiles come from a limitless source material that is found locally, is stain resistant and extremely durable, and lasts a long time (50 years is not uncommon). They’re great for high-traffic or outdoor areas of your home. Another selling point is that they emit no VOCs. You can also buy recycled ceramic tiles, which contain glass, stone, and dirt, to go even more green.

Concrete

Concrete Floor by Chris Baransk
Concrete Floor by Chris
Baransk

Another green flooring material in plentiful supply, concrete is often locally made, reducing fossil fuel use from shipping. Its natural finish means you don’t need additional varnishes or finishes, which improves air quality. Of course, it’s durable and long-lasting, and it’s also slow to heat or cool. This keeps your interior temperate and reduces energy use and the cost for heating and cooling.

However, traditional concrete is less green than other flooring materials. The concrete-making process requires water, a valuable natural resource, and cement, which is produced by grinding together clay, limestone, and sand. This procedure is energy-intensive, uses fossil fuel, and releases carbon dioxide into the air. Fortunately, recycled concrete is starting to appear on the market, which mixes concrete with fly ash from burnt coal and recycled glass, making this flooring material greener.

Natural and Recycled Carpet

Recycled Carpet by Ryan Somma
Recycled Carpet by Ryan
Somma

Traditionally, carpet is not considered a green flooring material, since it is often made of synthetic materials such as nylon, polypropylene, and polyester. These materials release a high volume of VOCs after installation. However, natural and recycled carpet alternatives are on the market: wool, cotton, and jute are common natural carpet materials, while recycled carpet can consist of plastic soda bottles and old carpet. These alternatives use renewable, biodegradable, or recycled material to make soft, warm, sound-absorbant flooring.

In addition, with the Carpet and Rug Institute, carpeting is measured for its effect on indoor air quality (IAQ). Look for carpets with a green IAQ label to ensure they emit a low level of VOCs.

How Long Will Your House Last?

Old and New Toronto by James Cridland
Old and New Toronto
by James Cridland

The lifespan of residential buildings is a question of utmost importance for every homeowner. Once you build or buy a new house, you expect that it will last for a while so that your children and grandchildren can live there. However, nowadays we often hear that modern houses aren’t built as well as they were in the past. New houses and residential buildings are being erected in vast numbers in a relatively short time by large contractors that specialize in a particular industry. People are skeptical, mainly due to cheap materials that constructors tend to use. However, there’s been a substantial technological development in engineering and construction that should result in reliable, longer-lasting buildings.

Old vs. Modern Houses

Most residential buildings built today rely on engineering principles more than massive and strong building materials. It’s therefore more likely that even small construction mistakes and errors will have a substantial impact on the house’s warranty and quality. Another important consideration is that these errors usually affect a larger extent of new residential buildings, as they are often built together over a short period of time. A huge warning indicator is the vast problem with houses of low standards in China that arose in 2010, after finding out that most of the new constructions won’t last more than 25 to 30 years, at which point they’ll essentially turn into a pile of dangerous garbage. Nobody would like to find himself in such a situation, with a house that starts to fall apart right after you pay off the loan.

It’s true that a century ago, homes were built of stout materials like old-growth timber, durable stones, slate, and brick. Old trees are much more dense than the younger ones that are used today due to the huge number of new constructions. Moreover, builders today are trying to keep the costs down so that more people can afford their houses. As a result, house affordability is substantially higher than in the past, but the quality of the cheapest houses very often drags behind.

Wooden Houses vs. Brick Houses

Brick House by Jennie Faber
Brick House by Jennie
Faber

There are many external factors that determine the lifespan of a building, such as climate, maintenance, weather, location, and traffic. Choosing a house made of appropriate materials and components and taking proper care of it can substantially extend its life expectancy. Let’s compare houses made out of the two most common materials, wood and brick.

A brick house can easily last over 100 years, but so can a wooden house. However, houses made of wood are more prone to strong winds and fires and won’t last as long as brick houses in windy regions with strong precipitation. On the other hand, they are more flexible and therefore very common in regions with a high rate of earthquakes. The connection between location and building materials of your house is crucial for your home’s insurance rate. The main advantages of brick houses are that they require less maintenance, you don’t have to paint their exteriors, and they provide better insulation. On the other hand, they’re more expensive and the construction process is considerably longer.

Condo vs. Townhouse

Condos by Don Toye
Condos by Don Toye

The lifespan of a residential building is determined by several factors, such as its location, climate, weather, materials, and building type. There have been many debates about the life expectancy of condos and independent houses. Large cities are being crammed with new high-rise condominiums, especially Toronto, which is the world’s leader in the number of high-rise buildings under construction. The biggest advantage of condos is that they require significantly less maintenance than individual houses. On the other hand, the taller a building is, the more prone it is to the ravages of time and harsh environmental conditions, so the shorter its lifespan. A townhouse owner spends more time on maintenance and security issues, but she can be sure that her children and grandchildren will be able to live there.

Throw-away Buildings in Toronto

Recently, there’s been a controversial debate about the lifespan of glass condos in Toronto. Experts claim that these “throw-away buildings will fail 15 to 25 years after they’re built and will need retrofits costing millions of dollars.“ The main causes of this problem include insulation failures, water leaks, skyrocketing energy and maintenance costs, and declining resale potential. Glass walls are cheaper than other materials, and they create a good first impression; however, the hidden price is much higher than anyone would be willing to pay.

The main cause is the “wild“ temperature change during different seasons in Toronto. “The freeze-thaw cycle will eventually cause the sealant in the windows to fail, resulting in more hot & cool air getting into each unit.“ (Here’s a diagram that explains the failure of glass-wall condos.)

Life Span of Home Components

To avoid similar problems, you have to consider several questions before buying a condo or a house. A new house starts to wear out immediately after constructed. It’s therefore important to pay attention to the maintenance and lifespan of individual components. Their life expectancy depends on the quality of installation, level of maintenance, weather and climate conditions, and the intensity of use. The U.S. National Association of Home Builders released a study in 2007 that analyzes the life expectancies of different home components to which we should pay attention.

Roofing

Roof by Daniel R Blume
Roof by Daniel R Blume

There’s no doubt that one of the most important components of each house that determines its lifespan is its roof. The life of a roof depends mainly on local weather conditions, material quality, proper building, design, and adequate maintenance. According to the study mentioned, slate, copper, and clay/concrete roofs have the longest life expectancy — over 50 years. Roofs made of asphalt shingles should survive for about 20 years, while roofs made of fibre cement shingles are expected to last for about 25 years, and roofs made of wood shakes should last for about 30 years.

Insulation

The study shows that there aren’t any substantial differences in the life expectancies of different insulation materials. All types of insulation should last a lifetime if they’re properly installed and maintained and are not punctured, cut, or burned.

Windows

Another very important question to consider is the material of your windows. The initial costs of both plastic and timber windows are similar. However, there’s a huge difference in their lifespans. Well maintained wooden windows can last for centuries, while plastic should be replaced every 20 to 30 years.

Paint

Generally, homes need to be painted every five to ten years depending on the quality of the paint, its exposure to moisture, weather conditions, traffic, etc. However, high-quality paints are expected to look good for as much as 20 years.

External Materials

Brickwork is often considered to be the most reliable external material. However, the reliability of bricks depends on the quality of work and climate more than any other materials. Once water gets through the brickwork, it starts to cause all kinds of problems behind it in the cavity, such as soggy insulation, damp patches inside the house, and rusting wall ties. On the other hand, properly installed brickwork is maintenance-free and very strong. Other alternatives have their pros and cons as well. Render is likely to start cracking. Tiles are prone to wind damage and cracking. Timber boarding can start to rot and needs more maintenance than other materials.

The Oldest Building in Toronto — The Scadding Cabin

Scadding Cabin by Wikimedia Commons
Scadding Cabin by
Wikimedia Commons

It’s not surprising that the oldest building in Toronto is made of wood since it was the most common building material of that era. It proves, however, that not only houses made of sturdy materials such as bricks or stone will last long. This small building is located on the western grounds of the CNE, adjacent to the Fort Rouillé Monument. The Scadding Cabin was constructed in 1794 on behalf of John Scadding, who was a clerk in the office of the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada, John Graves Simcoe. The original two-storey log cabin was disassembled from its original site and rebuilt by the York Pioneers at its current site for the Toronto Industrial Exhibition in 1879.

Sales Continue to Grow in January 2012

Last month, 4,567 sales were reported through the TorontoMLS® system by the Greater Toronto REALTORS®. The number was 8.8 per cent higher than January 2011. The sales of low-rise homes surrounding the City of Toronto grew at the highest rate.

Toronto Real Estate Board President Richard Silver commented on this increase: “A favourable affordability picture bolstered by very low posted fixed mortgage rates has kept home buyers confident in their ability to achieve the Canadian goal of home ownership.”

According to Silver, the structure of purchases remained diverse in the GTA and buyers were strongly interested in all home types.

The average selling price of the transactions reached $463,534 in the first month of 2012. This number is almost 9 per cent higher than in January 2011.

Jason Mercer, the Toronto Real Estate Board’s Senior Manager of Market Analysis, explained the market development: “Low inventory levels have kept competition between buyers strong, resulting in robust annual rates of price growth over the last year.“

Mercer expects the strong price growth to attract even more listings as a result of a better supplied market that slows down the rate of price growth. The increased number of the attracted listings should be especially notable in the second half of this year.

Over time, fashion is becoming increasingly popular in Canada. Of course, Canadian cities cannot compete with the world’s trendiest fashion cities like New York, London, Paris, or Milan. On the other hand, Canada’s charm and the lifestyle of local people are reflected in what has become one of the most successful Canadian fashion labels in decades. This prestigious fashion label represents two unique personas, Dean and Dan Caten, or Dsquared2.

Biography

Dean and Dan, future fashion stars, were born and raised in the suburbs of Toronto. Fascinated by the charm of dresses, they have been inspired since childhood. The first inspiration was their own sister, for whom they began designing imaginative outfits even as little boys. One of their first professional stops was one of the most famous design schools, the Parsons School of Design in New York City. However, the key decision for their careers came in 1991, when they left for Italy, specifically to the fashion mecca of Milan. Before long, their undoubted talent was noticed by the most famous fashion designer of the era, and thus they began working with the most popular fashion house of Gianni Versace. Afterwards, they continued their successful careers with the renowned denim brand Diesel. In the year 1994, Dean and Dan set up their own label in Milan, where these fashion twins started to build the unique project called Dsquared2.

Fashion Identity

Tomiyama

The fashion industry presents a very specific sector with the most competitive environment in the world. If you want to be successful in this business, you have to present your own original fashion identity right from the beginning of your career. But this is not enough. Each of the major fashion labels has a clearly defined group of customers and a strong emphasis on brand marketing. In spite of their desire to succeed in such a hard business environment, the popularity of Dsquared2 has increased over the past ten years such that it presently ranks among the world’s most prestigious labels, such as Armani, Gucci, Versace, and Dolce & Gabbana. The innovative collections of high-quality materials contribute to an ever-growing fan base.

The intelligent mix of provocative Canadian wit and refined Italian tailoring, together with an attention to detail, are the foundation of today’s Dsquared2 philosophy, which has given life to a unique concept of alternative luxury. From my point of view, the fashion identity of Dsquared2 is attractive to all ages, yet it features a touch of youth. Basically, it is not typical Italian elegance, but rather something like ‘cosmopolitan elegance’ with elements of street lifestyle, the beach, and enjoying the nightlife.

As we know, each of these major brands has a plethora of its own fashion ambassadors and sympathizers. Dsquared2 is no exception. The brand’s unusual style is loved by many popular celebrities. The twins have mentioned in many interviews that working with the famous Madonna is definitely one of their most valuable references. Their unique designs have been worn by Rihanna, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Nicolas Cage, and also some Canadian idols including Celine Dion and Bryan Adams. In 2003, Dean and Dan were awarded by the prestigious fashion magazine GQ with the Men of the Year Breakout Design Award. In addition to all this, Dsquared2 designed the new official uniforms for the popular soccer teams FC Barcelona, Juventus Torino, and FC Internazionale Milan.

Every year, BMW Mini Cooper gets an overhaul from different fashion designers for the Life Ball, Europe’s largest AIDS charity event. Dean and Dan had their opportunity in 2011. The Canadian twins have put a great amount of effort into giving the Mini Cooper some muscle and making it look raw and aggressive. The Mini Cooper Red Mudder has a raised chassis, large front guard, rally-style headlamps, and all-terrain tires. It also features a great-looking interior, which unveils some of the modern aspects of the Dsquared2 philosophy.

Dean and Dan represent the unique result of hard work in the contemporary fashion industry. Their work and achievements count as a great inspiration for a new generation of talent in Canada.

Dark Horse Espresso Bar: Review

There has been a trend in some coffee shops towards mass production. The food is made in a factory and shipped out to the various locations. Because the sandwiches and baked goods have to last longer, they are pumped with additives to extend their shelf lives and are then left to sit in a refrigerator for days on end. But Dark Horse Espresso Bar is a different breed of coffee shop entirely. They favour all that is natural, and it shows in the taste and value of everything you can purchase from them.

There are several locations you can visit in Toronto. Two of them are along Queen Street, and the third is just North of Queen, on Spadina, in Chinatown.

Interior

Dark Horse Espresso Bar by Matt MacGillivray

Interior by Matt MacGillivray

There is no plastic or artificial feel when it comes to Dark Horse. For example, the Chinatown location features exposed brick, wooden pillars, and natural-looking tables and chairs. All this is complemented by elegant chandeliers that hang from the ceiling and bouquets of flowers that adorn the room. And instead of the dark dinginess and florescent lighting you find in many chain cafes, this particular location has an entire wall of windows that lets the natural light shine in. The cafe has two floors. The larger of the two features long tables that allow you to spread out and get work done or strike up a conversation with someone new who happens to be sitting beside you. The second floor is a smaller, more intimate space with individual tables that allow for catching up with an old friend or a quiet business meeting.

Food

They have some delicious food options to choose from, such as whole grain muffins or fresh-pressed panini. They also offer yoghurt parfaits, a soup of the day, and several inventive baked goods. In addition, they cater to different food needs, so they even have some vegan options available.

Beverages

When it comes to beverages, nothing else compares. Many of the people who work here are trained in latte art, so your beverage will likely be adorned with a delicate flower or inspirational heart. And they don’t load the drinks up with chemicals as they do in other coffee shops, but rather invite you to sweeten your coffee with a more natural option such as honey or brown sugar.

You can certainly order your drink and food to go if you are in a hurry, but if you have the time, I would definitely recommend sitting down with a warm beverage in a real mug and soaking in the relaxing atmosphere. Dark Horse Espresso Bar is truly a unique coffee experience!

Unknown Torontonians: Basia Bulat

by John Benson

Basia Bulat (pronounced BAH-sha boo-LOT) was born in Etobicoke (now part of the City of Toronto), Ontario, in 1984. Beginning with piano at an early age, Bulat soon progressed to ukulele, guitar, saxophone, banjo, flute, and (perhaps most iconically) the autoharp.

Both she and her brother, Bobby, were involved in various bands in their teenage years, and this musical interest persisted when Bulat left Toronto for London, Ontario to attend the University of Western Ontario. During her time in London, Bulat became more seriously involved in music and had her own program on the campus radio station.

In 2006, Bulat stayed in Montreal for a few months, and it was there that she recorded a number of songs with the help of a studio owner named Howard Bilerman. Although Bulat had, at first, no intention of distributing this proto-album for public consumption, Bilerman eventually had it released by Rough Trade Records in 2007, first in Japan and Europe and then in North America. Along with many praise-filled reviews, this debut album (entitled Oh My Darling) was nominated for a Polaris Prize in 2008.

Since that time, Bulat has toured the United States, Australia, Europe, and Canada, and has released a second album, Heart of My Own, in 2010. When not touring, she lives in Toronto.

Top 10 Environmental Movies of 2011

StumbleUpon 0 Like 0 Retweet 0
Environmental Film Festival
Environmental Film Festival

Environmental movies are among the most effective ways of drawing attention to the sensitive issue of environmental degradation. They usually cover a wide range of genres, and the format is not limited to the documentary. Some of them are far from the Hollywood style, while others are rather mainstream films. Their overall annual production reaches high numbers. If you are lost in the rich offer or hesitant about which to pick up, you might find an inspiration from the best movies of EFFY 2011, the Environmental Film Festival at Yale, as well as in the offer of highlights of the 2012 DC Environmental Film Festival, which will take place in March 2012.

The City Dark

This documentary by Ian Cheney is based on the symbols of the night sky and darkness. The director of this movie reveals his passion for stars and astronomy. The film begins in a melancholic way and continues unexpectedly rapidly. Apart of the pollution problem, which is the main focus of the film, psychological and social aspects of environmental issues are represented through the handful of interesting characters. Watching the 80-minute film will take you into the shadowy world of astronomers, biologists, cancer patients, researchers, light bulb owners, and animals, whoa re more than puzzled by the light pollution and the way of city life in general. Austin reviewers wrote that the movie “has an almost therapeutic effect.” The film was awarded a jury price in EFFY 2011.

Transition Town Totnes

This short film also honoured by the jury of EFFY 2011 tells the story of the Transition Movement through the example of the town of Totnes in England. Rob Hopkins, founder of the Transition Movement, explains the benefits of community resource management, striving for sustainable development using local food and energy production. The successful and persuasive example of Totnes should serve as a motivation for all neighbouring communities interested in smart solutions to combat climate change along with saving some money.

YERT: Your Environmental Road Trip

A contender for the EFFY Audience Award according to the number of ballots distributed to filmgoers of the festival, YERT is a road trip documentary that follows the adventures of three young people. These twenty-somethings decide to travel through the U.S. over the course of one year, determined to find out more about climate solutions. The main characters are themselves producers of the movie, Ben Evans and Mark Dixon, accompanied by Ben’s wife, Julie Evans. Their story is based on the true developments of a journey that changed their ordinary lives and cost them their life savings. However, the personal and material sacrifice was obviously worth the final outcome achieved through the film.

Waste Land

Another EFFY Audience Award winning film, Waste Land is a 2010 documentary directed by three people of different nationalities. The making of this highly appraised movie lasted three years. In the centre stands a successful artist called Vik Muniz who sets up for the journey from Brooklyn to his homeland, Brazil. The movie focuses on the issue of *Jardim Gramacho, the “waste land” and the world’s biggest garbage dump. Muniz finds his inspiration in taking pictures of catadores — men who make their living by hunting the recyclable items. As Muniz gets to know them better, the metaphor between the environment and their lives is revealed.

African Cats

This nature documentary produced by DisneyNature centres on two cat families and the everyday (non)routine of spectacular lectures in which cubs are taught what it really means to live in the wild. The film is an attractive mixture of real-life love, gentle humour, and the incredible determination of these animals who are constantly being tested to prove their surviving power on a daily basis.

Mission Blue

The inspiration for this film lies in the wish ofDr. Sylvia Earle, a renowned oceanographer, titled a “Living Legend” by the Library of U.S. Congress. It presents her work and simultaneously depicts the blue beauty of the world’s waters, pointing out the dangers threatening oceans, which are mostly human caused.

Sun Come Up

Sun Come Up is a short documentary that depicts the effect of global warming in the Carteret Islands of Papua New Guinea. The inhabitants abandon their homes as a result of increased sea level threatening the agricultural conditions of their home. The movie takes a thorough look at their painful decisions and complicated struggle with environmental changes in a heartwarming way.

Into Eternity

Into Eternity Poster by Wikimedia Commons
Into Eternity Poster
by Wikimedia Commons

This 75-minute long documentary on the safety of nuclear waste and its storage explores the reality of the world’s first permanent deposit of nuclear waste, located in Finland. A complicated system of underground tunnels serves as a place where high-level radioactive waste from nuclear power plants is deposited. The substance remains hazardous for a minimum of 100,000 years. The movie presents a frightening and pessimistic outlook on digging deep into the earth for this purpose.

Nostalgia for the Light

Written, produced, and narrated by Patricio Guzmán, the film is a passionate meditation on both morality and metaphysics illustrated through the fate of the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. Situated on the side of the Chilean Coast Range, it is one of the highest deserts and driest places in the world. It is even possible to spot Atacama from space as a brown spot on Earth. There are places hidden inside where no rainfall has been ever reported and everything is preserved without moisture. Guzmán pays attention to the local traces of pre-Columbian civilizations. The film also mentions the concentration camp established in the 1970s during the regime of General Augusto Pinochet.

Sylvia Tyson was born Sylvia Fricker on September 19th, 1940, in Chatham, Ontario. Playing guitar and autoharp as well as singing, Fricker’s first major musical forays were in coffee-houses in Toronto, and later for club audiences in 1959, with her future husband, Ian Tyson. By 1961, Ian and Sylvia (as they were officially known) were playing in clubs in the U.S. as well as attending the Orillia Mariposa Folk Festival.

The pair were married in 1964 and soon became two of the best known faces of the folk genre of the period, both as musicians and as the writers of such songs as Four Strong Winds (by Ian) and You Were On My Mind (by Sylvia). After thirteen albums and much applause, Ian and Sylvia divorced in 1975, and went their own separate ways musically, as well. Sylvia way involved solo work (which she had begun before the break-up), as well as branching her career into radio by hosting the CBC folk music program Touch the Earth from 1974 to 1980. She continued to perform with the band she and Ian had formed in 1968. Tyson was also involved in television as a host for CBC TV’s Heartland and Country in My Soul and even did some scriptwriting for Video Hits. With ten solo albums recorded since the duo Ian and Sylvia ended, Tyson was also wrote and performed in stage musicals such as The Piano Man’s Daughter. In 2000, she joined Caitlin Hanford, Gwen Swick, and Cindy Church as a member of the all-female music group Quartette.

Sylvia Tyson is now a member of the Order of Canada, and also serves as the president of the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. She still resides in Toronto, and recently completed her first novel, Joyner’s Dream, published by Harper Collins in early 2011.

Intense, action packed and a little gory! Be for warned. Rolling Stone Mag calls it one of the best if not THE best of the year but won’t get much Oscar buzz because of the R rating!

Gordon Lightfoot by Peter Beens
Gordon Lightfoot

One of the best known Canadian folk musicians in history is still alive and singing, and living in Toronto. Born in the Ontario city of Orillia, on November 17th, 1938, Gordon Lightfoot was singing in Kiwanis festivals, and was even being broadcast locally on the radio during his teenaged years. By the time he was twenty, Lightfoot had delved into piano and drums, had sung in a barbershop quartet, and had studied at the Los Angeles-Westlake College of Modern Music.

Back in Canada, he took up the guitar and became involved in folk music, recording four albums as a member of the group Two Tones in the early sixties. The music of the rising Bob Dylan greatly influenced Lightfoot’s lyrics, and his songs became popular through their renditions by the likes of Peter, Paul and Mary, and Ian and Sylvia Tyson (with whom he would tour England in 1966).

His debut album, entitled simply Lightfoot!, was released in 1964 and would eventually be followed by over forty others. Lightfoot continued performing in coffee houses, at folk festivals, and other venues, and easily survived the shrinking popularity of the folk genre to become truly famous throughout North America by the 1970s. He toured Canada, Europe, and Australia, performed nine concerts on nine consecutive nights at a sold-out Massey Hall in Toronto in 1978, and was averaging between 60 and 70 North American concerts per year through the 1990s.

His schedule has lightened considerably since suffering a major haemorrhage in 2002, but Gordon Lightfoot is still performing live on tours across North America. So far, he has won fifteen Juno Awards, and is both an Officer and a Companion of the Order of Canada. He lives in the North York area of Toronto.
