Weston Road has a deserved reputation for being paved and strip-malled into submission, but a number of quiet side streets running between Weston and Jane Street, north of Lawrence Avenue, offer some of the best values in Toronto.

It's hard to imagine buying a five-bedroom house in the 416 area code for less than $400,000, but this 2,200-square-foot brick dwelling came in under the threshold.

It has a formal living room with a wood-burning fireplace, but the rest of the home has a casual décor and open design, according to listing agent Julie Kinnear. The bright European-style kitchen is open to the dining room, which, in turn, is adjacent to a sunken family room with parquet floors that opens out to the back-yard patio.

The second-storey was put on the original structure -- a two-bedroom bungalow -- about 20 years ago. More recently, an en suite was added to the master bedroom. It features marble and ceramic counters and floors, and a glassed-in shower stall.
