Special history that the lucky future buyers will inherit. The sellers shared their story:
This home has had only two owners since it was built in 1905!
The first owners were a newly arrived immigrant from England and his wife who was born in Canada. They had a daughter and a younger son. The man worked for Simpsons Department Store as a delivery driver. In those days the deliveries were done by horse and carriage, and the spot where the garage sits today was originally a stable for housing his horse.
The second owners were immigrants from Italy that came to Canada in the late 1950's. WIth the big size of the house and no children at first, they opened their doors to families and friends that were also migrating to Canada in the first 5 or so years of owning it. This home became a safe first stop for many as they settled into a new country. The property holds a lot of fond memories for not only the owners but for a lot of families that stayed there in the first days of their new adventure and life in Canada. 1137 Dovercourt was this family's "castle"!
The second owners lived modestly but took exceptional care of the house. The backyard was used to grow tomatoes and the basement has a cantina, used to store homemade wine and tomato sauce. It has been a traditional Italian home full of good food, family and friends gathering with neighbours always dropping in as it was the central gathering place.
Most recently, the house was lived in by the couple's son and his family (wife and twin teenage boys) for a few months (while their own house was under renovation).
What they loved most about the home:
- The water pressure in the shower! It is so good that it became problematic as the two teenage sons would not get out of the shower!
- The neighbourhood -- The seafood, meat and bread speciality stores became a regular stop. Recommend: Baldassarre (fresh pasta), Parrallel, Blood Brothers Brewing, Newport Fish & Seafood, Nova Era Bakery, Gaucho Pie Company, North of Brooklyn Pizzeria. All are within 5 minutes walking distance.
- The easy access to transit and central location.
- The size of the house!!
- The 2 dining tables (kitchen & dining room), 2 tv rooms (main and basement) were great.
- Both adults worked from home, each with their own offices.
- The laundry and ample storage areas in the basement are terrific.
- Being a detached house with a nice distance from both the neighbour's houses guarantees a lot of sunlight in the house during the day.
- The two-car garage! Love that we didn't have to worry about snow removal and safety.
- The neighbours -- people look out for each other in this neighbourhood. A few times we inadvertently left our garage door open. Trusted neighbours took the time to come into the garage, press the garage door button to ensure the contents were safe.
