The 88th Academy Awards ceremony is just weeks away, as you may have noticed from the increasing number of memes that somehow depict devastated Leonardo desperately reaching for the ever elusive golden statue.
For some time it seemed that Leo's Oscar chase will overshadow the news about the ceremony itself, but then the nominations actually came out and a new topic was born. Everyone has probably heard about the controversy that was expressed by the trending hashtag on Twitter - #OscarsSoWhite has started a major discussion throughout both professional circles and general public.
Some of the actors have openly called for a boycott of the ceremony, others are advocating changes in the Academy, rather than not coming at all. Some people are even encouraging this year's host, actor and comedian Chris Rock, to openly oppose the lack of diversity during the live airing. Part of this controversy is the fact, that some pretty strong performances by African-American actors were snubbed - for instance Idris Elba in Beasts of No Nation or Will Smith in Concussion.
Whatever happens, there are a lot of really strong movies and astonishing performances competing for the faceless golden swordsman this year. The most nominations this year - 12, are held by the Revenant and as was mentioned before, everyone is waiting to find out if Leo chewed on that liver in vain.
